TennisViz and Tennis Data Innovations (TDI) announce long term partnership and launch next generation data insights

TennisViz and Tennis Data Innovations (TDI) have unveiled the latest in a series of next-generation data insights, set to enhance the tennis fan experience.

Following the successful launch of In Attack, Conversion and Steal insights earlier in the season, TennisViz and TDI have revealed their latest tranche of co-developed insights. These leverage TennisViz’ next generation Artificial Intelligence and TDI’s industry-leading match and tracking data, to provide fans with deeper understanding and richer narratives around the action on court. Designed to present fans with the right data at the right time, insights are being showcased within the broadcast of ATP Masters 1000 tournaments and the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in Turin as part of a pilot supported by the production team at ATP Media.

Two new insights set for launch from the 2022 National Bank Open presented by Rogers (Montreal, 8-14 August) are:

  • Shot Quality: Dynamically rates the quality of a player’s four main shots by assessing speed, spin, depth, width and the impact it has on the opponent. Enables analysis of players’ shots over time and objective comparison of player attributes across the ATP Tour.
  • Playing Style: Analyses multiple data points to objectively categorise a player’s playing style, with categories including Big Server, All Court Player and Attacking Baseliner, among others.

Insights set for release across the remainder of the 2022 season and into 2023 include:

  • Momentum Tracker: Shows the flow of momentum during a match
  • Performance Tracker: Analyses and visualises each player’s level of performance as a match progresses
  • Winning and Losing Plays: Highlights winning and losing tactics and patterns of play for both players
  • Serve and Return Game Performance: Rates players’ performance in their service games compared to return games

In addition to being served curated insights via broadcast coverage, fans will be able to access explainers, deep dives and in-play analysis via @tennis_insights on Twitter. Full insights will be made accessible to commentators and tennis media via a new dashboard, supporting deeper understanding of the game and what creates winning outcomes.

TDI, an independently run entity co-owned by the ATP and ATP Media, was established in 2020 to manage data and streaming assets across the ATP Tour and ATP Challenger Tour. As part of its remit, TDI is committed to enriching fans’ enjoyment and understanding of tennis via development of innovative new products, insights and metrics. TennisViz, established in 2017 and based in the UK, provides a range of innovative analytics specifically designed to engage fans, and has worked with ATP and WTA coaches to provide world-class player analysis. Through a new long-term strategic partnership, announced today, both companies aim to maximise value of tennis data and drive further innovation in the space.

David Lampitt, TDI CEO: “Together with TennisViz, we’re delighted to launch our latest wave of insights. These have been designed from the ground up with fans in mind and show the amazing things we can achieve with data and cutting-edge tech. We’re also delighted to formalise our partnership with TennisViz. For TDI it’s part of a long-term strategy to engage the brightest and most innovative companies emerging in the space and to enhance the way fans can experience and understand the action on court.”

Richard Hawkes, TennisViz Managing Director: “We are excited to announce our long-term partnership with TDI and launch brand-new Insights. While traditional data points tell us who’s won and lost, our Artificial Intelligence creates innovative sets of data that explain how and why. This gives fans a whole new perspective in real-time. Working in partnership with TDI, we are creating a new common tennis language.”

TennisViz announce long-term partnership with the United States Tennis Association (USTA)

TennisViz are excited to announce a long-term partnership with the United States Tennis Association (USTA).

The UK-based tennis performance analysis company will work alongside USTA’s Player Development and Performance Analysis Department to provide ground-breaking analysis that will significantly support the coaching provided to the top tennis players in the United States.

TennisViz will provide revolutionary AI software that assesses every shot played in a match and original and innovative insights that accurately show how a match has been won and lost.

This comprehensive analysis will be automatically fed for USTA’s use, where previously it would have been collected manually at significant time expense.

David Ramos, Director, Coaching Education and Performance Analytics at USTA, commented:

“The TennisViz data, visualisations and insights are a game-changer for our developmental and scouting applications in Player Development.

“The ability to have the details at the shot and point level as well as summary information that allows for comparison against tour standards is truly unique. We have been working with industry leaders for the past five years to develop a similar approach, and TennisViz has accomplished virtually everything we were unable to achieve.

“We are thrilled to have access to this technology and looking forward to implementing it to the fullest extent through the 2022 season and beyond.”

Head of Performance at TennisViz, Tom Corrie, said:

“We feel the traditional data points in tennis just show who is winning, not how matches are being won and lost.

“The team at the USTA were looking for something different, something new, and we are thrilled they are finding our process and insights so helpful.”

CricViz & The Hundred

The Hundred represents the start of a new era for English cricket and CricViz are excited to be at the forefront of this revolutionary moment for the game through official partnerships with the ECB, the PCA, Sky Sports and the BBC.

Three CricViz models will appear on the broadcast on both channels and on the official Hundred app – which you can download here

CricViz classic and fan favourite, WinViz – our win probability model – will be presented on both Sky Sports and the BBC as well as the Match Centre of the Hundred app. Unlike previous iterations of our WinViz model this version does not take account of team strength – with the purpose being to educate viewers about the balance of power in the game. The Hundred is a new format and this version of WinViz is modelled on the last 100 balls of a T20 innings. This new version of WinViz will update faster than previously, responding instantaneously to the changing score.

Analysis like the clip below, a CricViz-driven assessment of the England batsman Jonny Bairstow, is becoming more in demand. Bairstow, a vibrant and attacking batsman who was a key part of the World Cup winning squad, has struggled against deliveries which would hit his stumps – deliveries which, all too often, have hit his stumps.

The Hundred will also see the arrival of our new Player Ratings which rank every player in the tournament in batting, bowling and overall out of 100. These ratings are built off our Match Impact model – an advanced performance evaluation tool for limited overs cricket. The Ratings are built off career data in T20 cricket and are weighted for recency, regressed to account for sample size and adjusted for the Hundred. These ratings will appear on both Sky Sports and the BBC as well as in The Hundred App. The top ranked players in the men’s tournament are Sunil Narine and Jofra Archer at 95/100 and the top ranked women’s player is Nat Sciver at 97/100.

Finally, the official Most Valuable Player ranking for the tournament will be powered by CricViz Match Impact – continuing our relationship with the PCA which powers the MVP in first class, List A and T20 cricket. The MVP is based on our Match Impact model and reflects performances in the tournament itself.

CricViz are delighted to be part of a new era for the game and hope that our models and analysis take viewers closer to the action than ever before, making the game more accessible to new viewers and enlightening older fans as well.

CricViz Study Reported On By Times Of India

CricViz analysis features in the Times of India, focussing on how the Indian Premier League has the highest standard of T20 cricket in the world

With the IPL 2020 now well underway, The Times of India have published an article referencing a CricViz study completed in May, which concluded that the IPL is the highest standard of T20 cricket played anywhere in the world.

By comparing performance data from over 4500 different players across different leagues CricViz are able to assess the relative difficulty of that league. For instance, if a player does well in a certain league, and then struggles in another, you can infer that the standard of the first league was higher. By using such a large sample size, a clear picture starts to emerge and the T20 leagues around the world can be ranked with confidence.

One of the main surprises from the conclusions drawn from the original article is that five of the eight main domestic T20 leagues are of a superior average quality than a typical T20 international game.

The original article, written by CricViz analyst Freddie WIlde, and follow up article from the Times of India delve into the many factors which drive the conclusions made in the study.

How CricViz brings cricket analysis to life

Sky and CricViz’s analysis this summer help inform an increasingly data-hungry fan

At CricViz, our approach to broadcast is simple – we want to add detail, analysis and explanation to broadcasts of the highest quality. Cricket fans can now watch more cricket than ever, the consumer arguably more informed about the game than they have ever been before – and they want to be challenged.
