Q&A with Managing Director – Betting Services: Jack Hudspith

We caught up with Jack Hudspith, Managing Director – Betting Services, to discuss his background in the sports betting industry and his motivations for joining Ellipse.

Welcome to Ellipse. Can you tell us about your current career and experience in the sports betting industry?

Thanks, it’s great to be here. I’ve been in the sports betting industry for almost 15 years, most recently as Head of Product at the UK Tote for the last three of those. Over the eight years prior to that, I worked for a small sports data and betting consultancy with a keen focus on tennis and horse racing.

What excited you about the opportunity to join Ellipse and work with its specialist sports businesses?

You can’t help but be impressed with the quality of the output across the sports verticals at Ellipse both in their media and pro services. The opportunity to work with such a brilliant team to help shape something genuinely differentiating in sports betting is incredibly exciting. Ellipse is at the cutting edge of sports data and analytics. I’ve seen first-hand since starting the value added at each stage of the data journey, from collection through analysis and provision in the form of bespoke feeds or products. Working with the data science teams who are world leaders in delivering AI solutions to their customers and rightsholder partners is particularly exciting for me.

Given your career experience, where do you think Ellipse can make a difference in the sports betting market?

With the depth of data and expertise we possess, I think Ellipse is very well placed to facilitate a step change in the quality of products across several sports. Whether that be through customer engagement, insights, and metrics previously unattainable or powering and pricing new markets in ways others can’t. Some of the work I’ve seen in my short time here, particularly in tennis and horse racing, is genuinely compelling.

Outside of your career, what is your connection to sport?

I’m a huge sports fan, and I’d like to say cricket takes the top spot. However, our CricViz experts thoroughly expose me with their level of niche knowledge. I enjoy a round of golf, and I’m lucky that my career has allowed me to indulge my love of horse racing. As a lifelong Chelsea supporter, I’ve got the 2027/28 season earmarked for the quadruple and Cole Palmer’s Ballon D’or…

How do you see the sports betting industry evolving in the next 12-18 months?

There is scope for significant innovation in sports where betting products have stagnated for too long – cricket, tennis, and horse racing are immediate candidates. The explosion of options across football in recent years has proven the consumer appetite for high-margin, gamified betting products – bet builders being the obvious example with the adoption of new insight and metrics like xG. The provision and analysis of granular data, including tracking data, in other sports will support a levelling up of the customer proposition, and those who embrace it will reap the rewards. This is an area of particular specialism for Ellipse, and I’d encourage anyone who’d like to explore how we can help reach out to me.
